Website Navigation

17 Dec

I have recently been working on the navigation for my portfolio website. To do this I have been using Brackets, a free source coding software produced by Adobe. I used a mixture of HTML 5 and CSS 3 to produce the look that I require.

I chose to colour the text of each of the navigation button a pastel red. When working with the CSS I wanted to have a hover over feature so that when someone moved their mouse over a button the text would change white. This was the code I used to implement this function.

 nav ul li a:hover {

            color: white;

}

The problem I had then was that I also had a white rounded rectangle that was applied to the current page the viewer was on, this meant that when the user hovered over the current page the text would then also change white, resulting in not being able to see the text due to white on white. To change this I had to write another line of code to overwrite the hover feature only on the current page, this was the code used to do this.

nav ul li a.currentpage:hover {

    color:#67CE8A;

}

To style the white box around the current page navigation button I added a background colour line of code the navigation styling and also added a line to made the top left and right corners have an 11px-rounded edge. Below is the code that I used to implement this.

.currentpage {

    color: #67CE8A;

    background-color: white;

    border-radius: 11px 11px 0px 0px;

    -moz-border-radius: 11px 11px 0px 0px;

    -webkit-border-radius: 11px 11px 0px 0px;

}

Concept Brief 2: Fire Kills

9 Dec

The second group project we had to complete was to produce a presentation pitch on a brief regarding fire safety. It was interesting to apply the skills and techniques we learnt throughout the first brief and to improve them to help complete this new task to the best of our abilities.

Image

The idea that we focused on was to produce a browser based 3D floor plan game that users can choose between different aspects and it will evidently auto generate a video that is based on the answers they provided. For example as the user walks around the house they may get the choice to move objects that block doors, pick up their keys, and more. An example would be that if the user chose not to pick up their keys then when their video was generated one thing it would include would be that they where locked inside the house for example.

We chose to produce our own interactive video rather than using YouTube’s service as we found it to be rather clunky and if we made our own we can allow the user to input different action simultaneously to produce one video rather than one at a time.

First Concept Brief: Bristol Zoo

4 Dec

My first concept brief within the concept and ideation module was to come up with an idea that included a new way of digital interaction within Bristol Zoo. So in our small group we began brainstorming ideas on paper with our thoughts and along with research about the zoo. We done this by finding out what digital presence the zoo already had then we discussed what we all thought where the key aspect/features of a zoo.

The next step that we took was to combine the key factors of what we thought a zoo was and to incorporate as many of them as possible into a piece of interactive digital media. We came up with a few ideas such as touch screen quizzes placed around the zoo, QR codes for factual information, 3D mapping for tours, however we then came up with the idea of a planetarium style dome that featured different habitats and animals.

We decided to focus on this idea and to build upon it further, we done this by included all the key features of a zoo that we came up with throughout the brainstorming. This lead to a few ideas such as an interactive touch screen floor, for example in the sea biome the floor would imitate the sea bed and children could partake in mini-games to find a certain amount of coloured shells etc. We decided to have 4 biomes these being ocean, jungle, snow and safari. Each habitat people entered they would encountered relevant animals that would interact with the people on where they stood inside the dome. For the adults we decided that on the walls of the dome small facts would appear next to animals to show information.

This was a really interesting first group project to work on and pitch, it started my creative mind set on coming up with new ideas based on previous work and to ensure all brief aspects where met.

What is Identity?

1 Dec

What is my identity? Am i just one person? Do i have more than one identity?

These are all very interesting questions and concepts that we have been discussing in one of my key thematic lectures. It is evident that we all have multiple identities that we are perceived as for example i am a Brother, Cousin, Friend, Boyfriend, Son, Colleague, and many many more. In each of these identities i am perceived via a range of traits and these mixtures of traits assist to mould me and my identity.

The interesting thing is that we all are shaped via how we interact with different aspects of media, for example the type of music I listen to may place me into a stereotype, the TV and Films that i watch may explain what my interests are, and the content that i produce explains wether i am a creative or passive person.

Another interesting thing to consider is that we also have group identities wether that be large groups of just two people, for example referring back to my previous statement. I will act very different around my social group of friends than i do around my colleagues, this is because i have to portray a positive mental attitude within the workplace however I am more open around friends.

A question that puzzles me is “Do we have full control of our Identity?”

I don’t have a definite answer to this…

What are your opinions?
